Divx Ultra : the new weapon of Divx Networks

Early june Divx6 was officially launched on the market in its final version . Since then endusers have been wondering about the compatibility with the existing and standalone players.

Our summary evidenced a partial compatibility with most recent players, and practically with all Divx Certified hardware. However, the constant lack is in the non recognition of chaptering and divx menus. To date, only the homemade software from Divx Networks allows a perfect compatibility with their new format.

The inventor of Divx has recently announced the creation of a new Divx Certification called Divx Ultra (more information here ) Quickly said, this new level of certification assures the full compatibility with Divx6, including chaptering and menus.

From this news one can easily guess that no current player will ever be 100% compatible with the latest evolution of the Divx codec.

Indeed the "former certification" has no reason to be updated, otherwise Divx Ultra would not have any meaning. Two explanations : either the current players really aren’t compatible due to soft/hardware limitations, or Divx Networks has decided to "sell twice the same" to the chipset/player manufacturers. Nothing surprising finally, as the inventor of Divx is a company founded to make profit...

At the same time, Zoran announce on their website that their Vaddis 882 chipset will be the first to be Divx Ultra Certified. Then compatible players are expected to land on the market before the end of this year.

Besides, a new generation of players, all equipped with the brand new Sigma-Design EM-8620 chip are about to be launched (Tvix HD-M5000U, H&B DNX-8620, Quartek WHD500-V9, Trans-Technology DVX-700, Zensonic Z500 etc...) and that makes the enduser’s choice even more difficult now. This new Sigma-Design chipset has also many assets, including High-Definition compatibility and built-in network capabilities.

Difficult to know yet if the EM8620 may also be Divx Ultra certified : that would surely avoid an annoying fight against Zoran. Noone wants to choose between Divx6 and High Definition. Finally Mediatek also plans a new generation of divx decoding chips , and there’s no actual information about them exept that they will be Nero Digital compatible... Who said "dilemna" ?
