Nero Digital with a simple firmware update : possible !

Yesterday the French manufacturer Peekton published a firmware update for their best-seller Peekton 6006, with the following official improvements :
-  support of the following subtitles formats : SRT/SMI/SUB
-  Divx 6 support
-  improvement with divx subtitles compatibility
-  RVB video output is now the default one

Nothing special, except maybe the confirmation that this company belongs to those who regularly deliver firmware updates, behaviour which has become seldom for certain competitors, even amongst the most famous brands.

Once the update is installed, the first feeling is a bit of disappointment : the Divx6 support is not complete, and menus as well as chapters are not recognized. It now seems obvious that only the future "Divx Ultra Certified" players will support such features.

But reality is that this firmware update hide a huge surprise, curiously not advertized by Peekton : a quite complete support of Nero Digital !

Nero Digital in its standard profile is the direct challenger of Divx6 : multiple integrated subtitles (in bitmap format, which avoids any compatibility problem), multiple audio-tracks and chaptering. With one advantage on Divx6 through its AAC audio codec which is much more performant than MP3.

Let’s be honest and confirm that the Peekton 6006 does not support the Nero Digital chaptering, but in this case we will not complain about it : it is now the first Mediatek based player to become Nero Digital compatible through a firmware update.

Or almost... There was one case before with the Kiss DP-558, equipped with a Sigma-Design chipset. But it is difficult to compare, as both players address a complete different kind of customers, and the pricing of the Peekton 6006 make the player fight in the "affordable players" field. Affordable and "ultra-compatible", as it also (partially) support the .ogm format (without subtitles though).

More than the improvements done, we salute the will to offer more for the same price ! Up to now, people who wanted a Nero digital compatible player had to buy a new machine.

Let’s hope other brands will follow. Mediatek already announced the integration of this format in their next chips , but nobody was thinking that it would be possible by a simple firmware update...
