Surprise coming from Peekton ! On 30th december Peekton delievered on their website a new firmware for the standalone player which is considered as one of their best-seller : the Peekton 6003. That update is even more surprising when one know that this model is not ditributed anymore.

Peekton give the following information concerning Ogm support :
-  OGG/OGM/DIVX OGG compatibility (does not support GOTO and FREW functions during OGG playing)

You will find all details about this firmware update on their website . Some changes in the divx subtitles are also announced.

Let us remind you that the 6003 player is a clone of the BBK967, manufactured by BBK. It is widely spread on the market, as you find it behind Atacom DV-967, Siltex DV-967 or Hometech HT-967DX (speaking of most known). This therefore means that Peekton’s update will be compatible with these clone models. Be carefull : the Atacom DV-967 v2 players are different, therefore cannot accept this firmware.

The 6003 is now officially the third model after Pioneer DV-575 and 470 players which can support both Ogg Vorbis and the .ogm container. Basically the Ogg compatibility is nothing new (Kiss and Yamada have been compatible for a long time), but the .ogm compatibility is a noticeable event and prove that a format that is everything except official can be taken into consideration by firmware developpers. Would this be the answer to the endusers pressure ?

Again we wish to draw everyone’s attention on the fact that (as for Pioneer models) the support is not complete. The specific functionnalities of integrated subtitles or multiple audio tracks are not supported (yet?). However this compatibility, even if only partial, remains very useful as it avoids for the users any particular handling to watch their videos (usually the only solution was a reencoding).

Beyond this information which will please Peekton’s afficionados, we may think that the .ogm compatibility is likely to reach all players of the great Mediatek family...

Without going into detail, let’s mention some users experience on our French boards who confirm that the xvid files encoded with packed bitstream seem to be now correctly read.

Of course the interest of such a news on DivxTest is that this official upgrade will surely have a direct influence on the 6003 rating of BBdoc .

Peekton 6003 returns ?
