Those who own a divX player know it : the latest version of Xvid leads to troubles if default options are used. The packed bitstream option make the videos unreadable on standalone players. And in this case, there’s only one solution : reencode files...
Up to now there was one solution however, but that was not always easy for most users : using MPEG modifier could fix the problem (see the related thread on MPC boards )
Yesterday a member of Surdvd boards informed us that the latest firmware update of the Targa DP-5100x (clone of the LG 8900P) brought, amongst others, the compatibility with packed bitstream in Xvid files!
That information has been confirmed by an other member in the meantime, who took the opportunity to test it on his LG8931H player, which he succeeded (but which we do not recommend at this stage). Both the Targa and the LG players are based on the Mediatek MT1389 chipset.
This information is a major information for two reasons :
first, solving the packed bitstream problem by firmware leads us to think that other Mediatek based players will follow. A similar case happened for .ogm files after Pioneer released its 2.09 firmware : some monthes have past and one can find .ogm (partly) compatible players like Pioneer, Peekton and the most recent 3255 player from H&B.
then, all that’s encouraging as it proves that firmware developpers still support free codecs !
